There is an Emergency Environmental Briefing for MPs happening soon, and we need your help to get them there.
A National Emergency Briefing on the climate & nature crisis is taking place on Thursday 27 November at Westminster Central Hall. The event is invitation-only: a non-partisan, expert-led briefing for 850 politicians and leading voices from business, culture, faith, and the media. Now it’s up to all of us to make sure our MPs attend!
Eight top experts, including Mike Berners-Lee, will give an unfiltered and concise assessment of the latest science – where we are, where we’re heading, and what we can do – in one authoritative session covering health, food, national security, and the economy.
Who is speaking?
The briefing features some of the UK’s most respected climate, nature, and risk experts:
-
Prof Mike Berners-Lee – Chair; climate researcher & author
-
Prof Kevin Anderson – Climate & energy systems
-
Prof Nathalie Seddon – Nature & ecological risk
-
Prof Paul Behrens – Food systems & food security
-
Prof Tim Lenton – Climate tipping points
-
Prof Hayley Fowler – Extreme weather & flooding
-
Lt General Richard Nugee – National security & resilience
-
Prof Hugh Montgomery – Health impacts of climate change
-
Angela Francis – Economics, finance & transition planning
These speakers will deliver a clear-eyed, evidence-based picture of the situation we face, with a focus on practical action.
Who is leading this?
The National Emergency Briefing is organised by leading experts and concerned citizens, spearheaded and funded by Simon and Nick Oldridge, climate funders and science communicators. The aim is simple: to ensure UK decision-makers have access to the best available evidence at a critical moment.
For a great insight into the initiative, listen to the interview with Nick Oldridge on Rob Cooper’s Climate Unfcked podcast*
A growing national coalition
The briefing already has support from a wide range of trusted organisations including:
-
Wildlife Trusts
-
National Trust
-
WWF
-
Greenpeace
-
Friends of the Earth
-
Church of England
-
British Ecological Society

And many more…
Organisers are also working with Climate Emergency Centres across the UK to build a coordinated national push.
How you can help
You can help by using the postcode checker tool on the briefing website to see if your MP is attending the National Emergency Briefing (ask friends and families in other constituencies to check for their MP too). If they are not, the tool automatically helps you to write an email urging your MP to attend on 27 November.
👉 SO FAR, NO Cheshire West MPs have confirmed attendance.
Public pressure matters — and MPs are far more likely to attend when they hear directly from their constituents.

Locally Relevant Points for a Chester MP Email
1. Flooding risk in Chester & along the River Dee
Chester is significantly exposed to river flooding, especially along:
-
The River Dee corridor
-
Handbridge, Hough Green, The Cop, Chester Meadows
-
Low-lying areas around Saltney & Lache
Recent years have seen:
-
Higher winter river levels
-
More frequent flood alerts
-
Greater pressure on local infrastructure and insurance costs
Letting your MP know that “local flood resilience is already under pressure” strengthens the case.
2. Impacts on local nature, farms & food
Cheshire West has a strong agricultural sector. Climate impacts here include:
-
Heat stress and drought affecting dairy and livestock farms
-
Flooding disrupting local arable land
-
Food supply vulnerabilities — a key topic one of the briefing speakers (Paul Behrens) covers
-
Declining biodiversity in the Dee Estuary and surrounding protected habitats
This links directly to the event’s focus on food security and nature loss.
3. Health concerns in Chester
Climate change is already affecting public health:
-
Heatwaves disproportionately affect older residents (significant demographic in Chester)
-
Poor air quality on key routes like Hoole Road / Boughton / A41
-
Rising mould/damp issues in rented homes after wetter winters
Chester’s MP will care about how this affects NHS pressures at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
4. Local economy & tourism
Chester’s economy is tied to:
-
Historic city centre tourism
-
Riverside events and outdoor festivals
-
Agriculture-based businesses in surrounding villages
Extreme weather is already disrupting footfall, events, and transport — making the economic dimension of the briefing directly relevant.
