Our History

Formed off the back of a highly successful campaign to rid Chester of single-use plastics, find out more about how Eco Communities got started.

Plastic Free Chester Status Achieved

Plastic free status was achieved (through Surfers Against Sewage) in Chester back in 2018. Work continues in the area with local communities, businesses, and individuals. A Plastic Free Cheshire campaign has since launched.

Eco Communities Formally Founded

Off the back of the success of the Plastic Free Chester campaign, Eco Communities was officially founded by Helen Tandy and Dr Christian Dunn. To this day, Eco Communities is managed on a voluntary basis by people who are passionate about helping the planet at a local level.

Sustainable Cheshire Started

Having achieved some localised success in Chester, the decision was made to expand outwards and attempt to make the entirety of Cheshire more sustainably aware and environmentally-conscious — Sustainable Cheshire was formed.

Litter Pick Hubs Implemented

A milestone in the mission of reducing waste in and around Cheshire, the first of our litter pick hubs were installed around Cheshire in 2022. This project intends to provide people the means to more easily reduce the amount of litter in their area.

Food For The Planet Campaign

In 2023, Eco Communities registered to support the Food for the Planet campaign. This project helps local authorities, businesses, and organisations take simple actions to tackle the climate and nature emergency through food.

Cheshire Cup Club Launched

A hot drink return scheme in Cheshire was much needed in order to reduce the amount of takeaway cups littering our streets. Since then, the project has expanded to supply reusable cups (half and pint glasses) for events.
