On 19th July, and the week running up to it, volunteers with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) will be showing up across the UK in the places we love, from beaches to streets and everywhere in between, for #ThePeopleVsPlastic Protest.

Helen Tandy, Founding Director Eco Communities and Rep for Surfers Against Sewage.

As a rep for Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) many of our projects link with them. On Saturday 19th July, just before the final Global Plastic Treaty talks, SAS are asking people to take to the streets, beaches and riverbanks across the UK to demand REAL action from the government.

Kicking off on the 14th, the week of action will see Plastic Free Schools taking part in a Nationwide Trash Mob, and other Million Mile Cleans taking place across the UK, to expose the scale of the plastic crisis and which polluters are most responsible.

The week is about people power – calling out polluting brands, broken promises, and demanding real change.

Energy and momentum building up throughout the week will culminate in our biggest Plastic Protest, due to take place on the Saturday. This is the day we’re encouraging Ocean Activists to unite and flood our much-loved local spaces nationwide, to take a stand against plastic pollution and demand the UK Government takes urgent action. We want to show up in numbers and in full creative force with placards, banners and creative costumes to send our message to big polluters and Government.

Across the UK, we’ve seen relentless ongoing community efforts to clean up the plastic pollution suffocating the environment and free our lives from single-use plastics, preventing pollution at the source. Yet big brands and retailers are continuing to pump endless pointless plastic into our lives, all while playing green washing games, lobbying against vital policies behind our backs and barely meeting ANY targets to tackle plastic pollution. The government must wake up to the public outrage over plastic and deliver radical systemic change to transition the UK to a Circular Economy–implementing ambitious legislation and holding polluters to account.Falling just a few weeks before the final Global Plastics Treaty negotiations,The People vs Plastic Protest is designed to send a powerful message to the UK Government, demanding they step up as an environmental leader on the global stage, and deliver ambitious progress in the UK to tackle plastic pollution; with the first immediate step of implementing vital legislation such as DRS and EPR without delay. We urgently need systemic change, that stops the plastic flow at the source, to end the toxic tide of pollution swamping the land and ocean. We’ll be showing up in numbers across the UK to the places we love, from beaches to streets and everywhere in between, for #ThePeopleVsPlastic

in Chester we are planning a ‘practical’ protest–ending in a Million Mile Clean to collect crucial data for us to use as ammunition against the biggest polluters.Working with you, and our communities around the UK, we’ll get creative with picture placards, banners, speakers, sculptures and creative costumes, all conveying our message to the government and the mass public support from communities across the UK demanding we #EndPlasticPollution

  • Why are we protesting against plastic pollution?
  • What are we calling for?
